"Fit Not Fat"
Helping Arkansas Children Eat Healthy and Move More

Nearly 40% of Arkansas children ages 2-19 are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.  As a state and a nation, we face a growing epidemic of childhood obesity with serious implications for the future. Preventing child obesity requires focus on overall health and fitness. Schools and communities need to move beyond BMI and vending machines to promote healthy habits.

Arkansas Geriatric Education Mentors & Scholars (AR-GEMS) is a continuing education program aimed at health professionals working with older patients who want to learn more about the aging process and improve the care they provide. Support for this program comes from a US Health Resources and Services Administration Grant awarded to the Arkansas Geriatric Education Center. Training for the AR-GEMS Program will take place at the DWR Institute on Aging and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. Health  professionals such as dietitians, physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists, social workers, and others, who provide care to older adults are invited to participate in this program.
AR-GEMS Program Goals
• To create area networks of geriatric trained health professionals.
• To promote the concept and practice of the interdisciplinary health care team.
• To establish regional experiential training sites for health professionals, students and faculty.
AR-GEMS Program Description
Each AR-GEMS participant will complete a brief comprehensive course in geriatrics/gerontology. All printed materials for the course will be provided. Additional materials will be available at designated Internet sites. Participants will be assigned mentors with experience in older adult care. Upon fulfillment of all requirements, participants will receive a certificate of completion showing 105.5 CEUs earned for nurses or 88 CEUs for all others .
